Lauded feature cinematographer Nancy Schreiber, A.S.C. has signed on to Dattner Dispoto’s elite DP roster. Her latest feature, “Every Day” premiered April 24 at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival.
“Every Day” is written and directed by Nip/Tuck’s producer/writer Richard Levine and stars Helen Hunt, Liev Schreiber, Carla Gugino, Eddie Izzard and Brian Dennehy. The dramedy is an honest look at the co-existence of marital and familial strain, with Liev Schreiber and Hunt playing a married couple struggling to deal with ailing fathers and independent teenagers under the same roof.
“The film is about one family’s struggle to survive the unexpected curve-balls that are simply part of real life,” says Schreiber. “Aging and death; commitment and freedom; love and acceptance. It’s an uncompromising look at an ordinary family making an extraordinary journey, as individuals and towards each other.”
Her other recent works include Serious Moonlight, starring Meg Ryan with Kristen Bell, Motherhood, starring Uma Thurman, Anthony Edwards and Minnie Driver, as well as The Nines starring Ryan Reynolds with Elle Fanning and Hope Davis.
“We’ve been watching Nancy’s career for some time,” says agency founder Fay Dattner. “She’s respected in the community. She’s able to work with different personalities and she always brings a good spirit with her to the job. It’s unusual for someone who is so credited to be as curious as she is about what’s new and what’s breaking. That curiosity is invaluable. And, she’s talented.”
Schreiber has lensed many of the industry’s forerunning actors, including OscarT winners Sandra Bullock, Marisa Tomei and Forest Whitaker as well as nominees Catherine Keener, Jeff Goldblum, Alec Baldwin and Matt Dillon. She has collaborated with actor/directors Shirley MacLaine, Kevin Bacon and Anne Heche as well as visionary directors Neil LaBute, Walt Becker, Michael Lehmann and Oscar winning documentary director Barbara Kopple.
Her accolades include the Sundance Film Festival Cinematography Award for November in 2004. She has been nominated for an Emmy, the Camerimage Golden Frog and an Independent Spirit award for The Celluloid Closet, Dead Beat and Chain of Desire respectively. Schreiber won Women in Film’s Kodak Vision Award in 1997.
Schreiber grew her career working with traditional film techniques, but has embraced all the new technologies opening up in the world of cinematography. She is often approached to test new HD cameras and tools, as her experience enables her to assess each product’s capabilities and be appropriately candid about their assets and limitations. She led two production workshops at this year’s NAB show for the American Society of Cinematographers and will conduct a number of DSLR seminars for Canon this spring and fall – confirming her status as a film artist at the vanguard of technological advancement. Her handheld work is widely admired by industry professionals.
