SHOOT Magazine, the leading publication for commercial and entertainment production, today announces the launch of the first ever Directors Symposium. In conjunction with SHOOT’s 8th Annual New Directors Showcase Event, the Symposium has been specifically created to provide a learning and networking opportunity to keep directors, producers, agency & studio creatives, production company entrepreneurs, and other artists & executives abreast of current filmmaking and commercialmaking trends.
Both, the daytime Directors Symposium and the New Directors Showcase Evening Event, combine to provide an ideal environment in order for filmmakers and commercialmakers to capitalize on new business opportunities, share expertise, meet new project partners, initiate creative collaboration, source new possibilities for work and help define opportunities in an evolving marketplace now clearly spanning advertising and entertainment (and the merging of those two worlds), the tools needed to take advantage of these opportunities (with a look at film & digital cameras, digital workflow and 3D), and the art of building an individual director’s brand.
From laughter to tears, drama to horror, spots to movie excerpts, dialogue driven to visual effects fantasy–that’s just a sampling of the range of emotions, genres, mediums and styles exhibited annually by a new generation of directors at SHOOT’s New Directors Showcase Event every spring. This is the 8th Annual Showcase Event and is set for May 11, 2010 from 6-10 p.m. EST.
2010 marks the sixth time that the SHOOT New Directors Showcase event will be held at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Theatre on West 57th Street in New York City. This year’s event promises to be even more informative and entertaining with an added daytime program called the SHOOT Directors Symposium consisting of speakers and panel discussions for commercial & film directors and members of the creative, production and post community involved in commercial & entertainment production.
We’re expanding the reach of our Directors Symposium and New Directors Showcase Event during a year in which SHOOT celebrates its 50th Anniversary, and when our Showcase event is being held to coincide with CreativeWeekNYC May 10-14, a week long series of events that will be attended by creatives and creative management from all over the world.
The SHOOT New Directors Showcase Event Evolves Into Two Separate Events: Here’s A Preview Of The Daytime and Evening Agendas Where Education & Entertainment Will Take Center Stage
The SHOOT Directors Symposium: 9:30am-3:30pm
This year SHOOT has even more to showcase as we are adding to the discussion by introducing exciting new daytime elements including a series of panel discussions and Q&A sessions featuring leading directors, agency creatives, production company entrepreneurs, and other leading artists and executives who will share their expertise, helping to define opportunities in an evolving marketplace spanning advertising and entertainment (and the coming together of those two worlds), the tools needed to take advantage of these opportunities, and the art of building an individual director’s brand. We’ll break mid-day for lunch downstairs. Topics addressed during the day will include:
— Advertising & Entertainment: Key Creative & Business Issues of today & tomorrow
— Creative Tools including film & digital cameras, digital workflow and 3D
— In The Directors Chair Interview with leading director involved in film and commercial production
— Showcase Perspective, a look back at some select past SHOOT New Directors Showcase directors, and how their careers have progressed, providing inspiration for our latest crop of talent.
New Directors Showcase Screening, Panel & After-party 6:00pm-10:00pm
The evening program which is the foundation of the event remains the same as in past years — we will screen work from all the selected up-and-coming directors, and we will hear from several of them as to their backstories and strategies for gaining exposure in the marketplace–along with critiques/observations from industry pros. And as always, the after-party affords attendees the opportunity to meet many of the new directors first hand.
1. SHOOT and The DGA welcome audience and thank sponsors
2. Screening of the 2010 New Directors Showcase reel which will include 25-30 pieces of work culled from submissions from this year’s New Directors Search
3. Panel introducing six of the featured new directors with two leading directors providing insight and perspective. Discussion led by SHOOT editor, Bob Goldrich, will focus on the agency/production co./director relationship and each new director will have the chance to discuss his/her work.
4. Next, we head downstairs at the DGA for the after-party. New directors mingle with more experienced directors, event sponsors, and event attendees. The party is always a great time with a fantastic mix of guests. With three categories of entry, the crowd will include leading advertising, media and entertainment industry producers, creatives, executives, artisans & brand marketers. Guests will top off a day and evening by enjoying great food, cocktails, and the opportunity to meet the new directors and mingle with industry friends and make new contacts.

About The New Directors Search / The New Directors Showcase Reel
Each year for the last eight years, SHOOT has conducted a worldwide search to discover the best up-and-coming directors who, based on their initial work, show promise to soon make major positive contributions to advertising and/or entertainment in its traditional and emerging forms. The search was conducted by SHOOT’s editorial staff with input from advertising agency creative directors & heads of production, as well as production company heads and established directors. This year’s search will be conducted from January 1-March 31, 2010. Over the years, there have been assorted cases of New Directors Showcase helmers going on to gain industry prominence. Consider David Gray who was in the 2005 Showcase and a year later went on to be nominated for the DGA Award as best commercial director of the year. (Gray was at Hungry Man when included in the ’05 Showcase and has since moved over to Station Film). And last month Ross Katz won the DGA Award for outstanding achievement in movies for TV/miniseries on the strength of his HBO film Taking Chance, the same film which garnered him inclusion in SHOOT’s ’08 New Directors Showcase. (Katz is available for select spot assignments via TWC.) If you are a new director or represent one, be sure to visit The New Directors Search page to see if you or your director meet the entry criteria and to print out The New Directors Search official submission form. The entry period ends on March 31.
