The lineup of profiles includes such notable directors as feature filmmakers Scott Hicks (Shine, The Boys Are Back) and Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) who are both also experienced in commercials (their respective ad roosts being Independent Media and RSA Films); Jamie Caliri of DUCK Studios who won an Emmy for the title sequence of the Showtime series United States of Tara, and Jim Jenkins of O Positive Films, whose Sprint Nextel “Wedding” spot was nominated for a primetime Emmy Award; Mr. Hide who made an auspicious U.S. spotmaking debut with a Toyota Prius campaign (including its centerpiece “Harmony” commercial) produced by The Sweet Shop; The Malloys of HSI Productions whose online mini-documentary for the band Oasis earned assorted accolades, including a GRANDY and a pair of AICP Next honors; Michael Gracey of Partizan who has directed such viral sensations as Evian’s “Skating Babies” and T-Mobile’s “Dance”; @radical.media’s Steve Miller who brought us “The Most Interesting Man In The World” for Dos Equis; Peter Nydrle of NYDRLE who offered an engagingly voyeuristic view in the lauded Chambers Hotel “Video Art Piece”; and Laura Belsey who shares not only insights into her work as a director but as a teacher.
On the latter score, two of Belsey’s NYU Film students, Gregory Mitnick and Nat Livingston Johnson (a.k.a., the directing duo Peking) are among the up-and-coming helming talent that SHOOT spotlights in its Fall Directors Issue. Other promising newcomers include the duo of Brian and Melanie; Finnish director Vesa Manninen; prolific funnyordie.com filmmaker Drew Antzis; agency producer turned director David Adam Roth; and VFX studio creative director David Rosenbaum who recently made his formal spot directing debut.
SHOOT also focuses on cinematographers with the stories of–and stories told by–DPs such as Daniel Pearl, ASC, David Higgs, BSC, Shane Hurlbut, ASC, and Sam Levy.
The News section of the issue is also ripe with directorial and DP insights, including Oscar-nominated writer Guillermo Arriaga reflecting on his feature directorial debut as well as his joining Independent Media as a commercials director; Mad Men DP Chris Manley, ASC, now returning to the spot arena; and director/cameraman Ken Arlidge of Aero Film sharing his observations and experiences on the viability of the Canon 5D Mark II camera.
