Editorial studio Proton signs on three new A-list editors, Nathan Petty, Edward Feldman and Erik “EJ” Johnson. All three bring their own unique style of editing to the studio. “Our new editors are a pleasure to work with. They’re strong and intuitive creatives, fun to be around, and have a real excitement about them” says Keith Orwell, founder of Proton.
The choice to expand the company in these hard economic times were of no concern for Proton as they have seen an amazing amount of success and growth due to their forward-thinking and innovative perspective. Proton has also begun a new concept of a “virtual studio,” giving the editors the ability to relocate to where the clients need them most during their production. Keith adds, “Our virtual studio makes us location agnostic. We can be virtually anywhere at the drop of a hat and we have deals set up to cut in Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles, as well as at our headquarters in NYC.”
Nathan Petty – Nathan comes to Proton with a decade of post experience cutting campaigns for major brands such as Nike, Jeep, Comcast, Sprint, Hilton Hotels, Scion and Ubisoft. Starting his career at the now defunct Goldberg, Moser, O’Neill, he worked his way from a broadcast department assistant to senior staff editor in just 3 years. In 2006 while working for Umlaut Films, Nathan was chosen as one of the top ten emerging talents in San Francisco by Boards Magazine. After a brief stop at Spy Post where he helped launch their editorial dept, Nathan has joined Proton.
Edward Feldman – Ed began his career in NY working in the promos department at VH1 before joining Mackenzie-Cutler as an assistant editor. He left NY for foggy San Francisco and soon found a home at Bob N’ Sheila’s Editworld working alongside Sheila Sweeney and Bob Spector. It wasn’t long before Ed began editing and working on spots for AT&T, Ebay TIVO and the Oakland A’s. He helped start Umlaut Films in 2004 and continued editing for agencies such as FCB, Eleven Inc., Mullen, ATTIK. Mekanism and McCann-Erickson. In 2006 his spot "Pac Man" directed by Mekanism’s Tommy Means, was featured in the AICP awards show. Ed has also been interested in working behind the camera. In 2003 he directed the trailer for the San Francisco International Film Festival. In 2007 he directed a short film, “A Day’s Work” which was the official entry at SXSW, Dresden Filmfest, Trieste International and The Mill Valley Film Festival to name a few. The film has gone on to win several awards. When Ed isn’t editing or directing he is walking his dog and trying to renovate his house. He loves his clients, film and his French bulldog Otis.
Erik “EJ” Johnson – With an obsessive eye for detail, EJ offers skilled collaboration and creative insight needed in today’s tech savvy market. A seasoned editor, EJ has held posts at Crew Cuts, MacKenzie Cutler, Mad River Post and other leading editorial boutiques nationwide. Erik’s past clients include Pepsi, E*Trade, Snickers and Heineken. EJ brings the perfect mix of experience and talent that makes any project successful and seamless. He is thrilled to join Proton.
Proton emerged on the post production scene in April of 2008 with its sole Editor Keith Olwell. Since 2008, even with the economic downturn, Proton has charged on gaining high profile clients such as Microsoft and just completed a Zune campaign with Crispin Porter that was cut in Proton‘s Chelsea, New York office. “Got to edit footage with Common and Afrika Bambaataa. Both guys had so much style and energy, it was awesome,” exclaims Keith. Ed recently completed a spot for Statefarm Insurance and he and a New York office based assistant relocated to a posh little suite in Austin Texas to cut. The spot told a story by way of stock footage to elaborate on the socioeconomic landscape we are facing right now. Another campaign for PG&E was just cut by Nathan in a San Francisco location for DraftFCB in both English and Spanish.
