A young man, let’s call him "Joe Cool"—the epitome of vanity and egocentricism—sits in his convertible sports car. He’s stopped at an intersection, which gives him much-needed time to glance in his side rear-view mirror to make sure that his hair is properly coifed. All is well, as every strand seems to be in its proper place.
Further boosting his morale is the sight of a shleppy, unkempt-looking guy in a Volkswagen, who pulls up alongside and waits for the green light. The preppy yuppie looks down his nose at the VW driver.
But that glance of superiority quickly evaporates when an attractive woman arises from the VW passenger seat. This is most disconcerting to Joe Cool, who presumes that the woman has been "servicing" the needs of the VW guy.
Well, that presumption is partially correct, in that she’s serving his aural needs—hunched over to seek the CD he wants to hear. When the VW driver informs her that she’s picked up the wrong disc, she again vanishes from the view of Mr. Cool, who continues to stare over from the next lane.
The VW guy nods a contented "hi" when he notices the stare, then zips off, leaving Joe to conclude about the VW, "I gotta get one of those."
The VW slogan then appears in supered form: "Drivers Wanted," followed by "CD changer optional."
"CD Changer" is one of three spec spots on the reel of director Shawn Driscoll. On the strength of this work, bicoastal Coppos Films has signed Driscoll for exclusive spot representation (see separate story, p. 7).
Driscoll conceptualized "CD Changer," serving as its writer, art director and director. He called in favors and on a shoestring budget assembled a crew of freelancers, including producer Kevin Canamar, first assistant director Tom Borgnine and editor Mark Wineman. The spec piece was shot by DP Roland Canamar.
