Stun Creative, a multi-award winning advertising agency based in Los Angeles, has produced a new live action TV, in- theater, and radio promo campaign for client TLC. The new campaign promotes both the January 26th telecast of the 2008 “Miss America Live!” classic beauty pageant and TLC’s new series, “Miss America: Reality Check,” which airs during January and leads up to that pageant. Stun co-presidents Brad Roth and Mark Feldstein made the announcement.

Regarding Stun Creative’s contributions to this promo campaign, Heather Weiss, VP, Creative, TLC Marketing, said, “For the first time in the history of the Miss America Franchise, the Miss America Organization and TLC are joining forces to redefine who Miss America is and what she represents. Stun Creative brought a unique approach to the campaign and infused the Miss America brand with a renewed vitality and excitement. The spots they produced for TLC are smart and funny, with exceptional production value. Stun Creative did a first rate job.”
ABOUT TLC’S “MISS AMERICA LIVE!” PROMO CAMPAIGN:
Stun Creative produced and directed a sexy, live-action promotional spot, entitled “Miss America Live!” which will air on TLC three weeks prior to the Jan 26th telecast of the “Miss America” pageant. More Victoria’s Secretโฆless Burt Parks, the spot catapults the pageant into the 21st century with explosions, catwalks and a twenty-foot high American flag.
Said Roth and Feldstein, “Our goal for this campaign was to help re-brand the classic ‘Miss America’ pageant with a modern and provocative vibe. We’re proud to say you won’t see a single sequin. It really is ‘Miss America’ as you’ve never seen it before.”
ABOUT TLC “MISS AMERICA: REALITY CHECK” PROMO CAMPAIGN:
For TLC’s new series, “Miss America: Reality Check,” Stun Creative also produced and directed a live-action, comedic promotional campaign starring “Ugly Betty” cast member Michael Urie. These spots, which broke in mid-December, 2007, in movie theaters, on the radio, and on cross-cable TV networks, will continue to play on those media during the month of January. The campaign utilizes Urie’s wonderfully sarcastic attitude, as he “helps” to update the stereotypical Miss America contestant.
TLC’s “Miss America: Reality Check” will air on four consecutive Fridays during January 2008, starting on Jan 4th, culminating with the live Miss America pageant finale itself on Jan 26th.
In the first “Reality Check” campaign spot, entitled “Training,” the viewer sees a number of actual Miss America contestants primping for their big day, many using too much makeup and hairspray, while others train for their “talent showcase,” which includes dubious cello practice and baton twirling. The voice over says, “They’ve been training for ‘Miss America’ for yearsโnow everything they’ve learned is about to change,” — to which Urie adds, “And it ain’t gonna be pretty!” The VO returns with, “It’s TLC’s biggest make-over ever,” as Urie replies, “It’s time to knock the beauty pageant on its sash!”
Add Feldstein and Roth, “The ‘Miss America’ contestants were all really great sports about poking fun at the traditional ‘beauty queen’ stereotype. And, of course, we certainly enjoyed working closely with them – although our wives weren’t too thrilled!”
In the second “Reality Check” promo spot, entitled “The Bachelor,” we see all 52 “Miss America” contestants standing in front of a gorgeous mansion, while the voice over says, “52 women competing for the dream of their lives will spend four weeks under one roof with one very eligible bachelor.” At this point, Urie comes forth on a balcony and says, “Big hair, big dresses, ladiesโbig mistake!” The VO picks back up with, “TLC and Michael Urie are giving ‘Miss America’ a makeover — from Gown to Crown.”
