SHOOT is proud to have been involved with the AICP Show since its inception. I remember when Jon Kamen, AICP national chairman at the time, called to tell me about the AICP’s "kind of crazy idea" about having an awards show without awards to be held at a museum. What he described was an innovative and imaginative plan, one that would create a very worthwhile event unlike any other awards show. And, as is proven every June, the AICP has indeed created a unique and special event honoring The Art and Technique of the American Television Commercial, and the talented artists behind the work. In 1992, SHOOT wrote the first article detailing the AICP’s plans for its new show and became one of the AICP Show’s first sponsors. Eastman Kodak became a major sponsor that year and has been the Show’s top sponsor ever since. Many other companies have been sponsors over the years and I’m sure, like SHOOT, are proud of their role in helping the Show succeed.
SHOOT wanted to do something special to celebrate the AICP Show’s 10th Anniversary and congratulate all the people who have made the Show a success over the years. We decided to do what we do best, put pen to paper?well fingertips to keyboard?and put together an issue to document the AICP Show’s accomplishments. We thought it would be especially interesting for young agency producers and creatives who may not be entirely familiar with how the AICP Show differs from other shows. We hope everyone will enjoy it, and be inspired by the sense of pride felt by the people who put the Show together each year. "Views from the Chair" takes us inside the mind and heart of each year’s chairperson as they describe their experience overseeing the Show and Lecture Series. Jon Kamen and MoMA’s Larry Kardish reminisce about how the Show started and what it means to the industry and the museum. We look at this year’s honorees and the most honored companies and artists during the last 10 years. We look at how the Show and compilation reel of honored commercials are viewed around the world. We give you a special look at this year’s Eisenstat Award-winners and share the interesting history of the Eisenstat Award. And we dip into SHOOT’s archives for coverage of the inaugural Show and highlights from the Lecture Series over the years.
On behalf of the entire staff of SHOOT, I’d like to offer congratulations to Matt Miller, Jon Kamen, the AICP board of directors, the AICP past and present Show chairs, and the entire membership on the occasion of the10th Anniversary of the AICP Show! It sure is something to celebrate!
